Keno used to be referred to as the White Pigeon Game, due to the fact that the winning numbers were broadcast by pigeons from larger cities to the smaller towns. The lottery ‘Keno’ was imported to America in the 1800s by Chinese newcomers who migrated to the United States to jobs. In those times, Keno used one hundred and twenty numbers.

Today, Keno is typically bet on with 80 numbers in most of American land based casinos along with web casinos. Keno grew in acceptance in the United States near the close of the 19th century when the Chinese characters were changed with , American numbers. Lotteries were not covered under the legalization of gaming in Nevada State in 1931. The casinos altered the name of the ‘Chinese lotto’ to ‘horse race keno’ employing the concept that the numbers are horses and you are wanting your horses to come in. When a law passed that taxed off track gambling, the casinos quickly altered the name to ‘Keno’.
